In Focus: Schengen
The objective of the Schengen cooperation is to realise the free movement of persons by abolishing checks of persons at the borders between the member states. Sweden participates in the cooperation since 25 March 2001.
The other participating states are:
Norway
Denmark
Finland
Iceland
France
Germany
Belgium
The Netherlands
Luxembourg
Italy
Spain
Portugal
Greece
Austria.
Ireland and the United Kingdom have chosen to keep the checks of persons at their borders.
To prevent that the free movement leads to increased international crime, there are a number of compensatory measures. The joint computerized information system, the Schengen Information System (SIS), is one of these measures.
Any member state can enter information in the SIS on persons who are wanted or searched for together with a request that a specific action be taken if the person is found. Each member state is responsible for its national section of the SIS. In addition to this, there is a joint central function in Strasbourg, the technical support function, which shall ensure that all the different national sections contain identical information. The SIS has been in operation since 1995.
The National Police Board in Sweden is responsible for the processing of personal data in the Swedish section of the SIS. The Data Inspection Board is the national supervisory authority and shall ensure that the processing does not violate the rights of individuals. Representatives of the Data Inspection Board also participate in the Joint Supervisory Authority which is responsible for supervising the technical support function of the SIS.
If you want to know whether there is information about you in the SIS, you may turn to the National Police Board (Phone +46 8 401 90 00 or rikspolisstyrelsen@rps.police.se). If you are not satisfied with how your request for information is dealt with or if you have other doubts as regards the processing of data in the SIS and its compliance with applicable law, you may file a complaint with the Data Inspection Board.
